Target ads based on the weather with Weather API tags

Target your audience based on weather conditions.

Updated over a month ago

In Fluency, you can create ads based on local weather forecasts. The Weather API provides forecasted—not current—weather conditions, so your ads will align with predicted weather. Please note that forecasts are refreshed once daily at 5 a.m. EST, and the API leverages data from OpenWeather.

Whether you want to advertise only when it's really cold or target ads based on a sunny three-day forecast, Fluency has you covered.

Unlocking the Weather API feature

Start by contacting your Advertising Engineer to unlock the Weather API tags under the Fluency tag section in Blueprints.

How to use Weather API tags

There are various ways to use weather tags, with valid when statements being the most common. These statements let you pause or enable ad groups or ads based on forecasted weather conditions. You can also include weather-related words directly in an ad.

Weather descriptions

Use the "description" tag to show major weather events with a weather descriptor. The tag format is [weather.today.description].

Use weather words like:

  • rain

  • snow

  • clouds

  • clear

  • drizzle

  • thunderstorm

Temperature

Use the "temp," "tempMax," and "tempMin" tags with plain numbers (without degrees or degree symbol) to show specific temperatures. The tag format is [weather.today.temp], [weather.today.tempMax], and [weather.today.tempMin].

Examples:

  • [weather.today.temp] = 30

  • [weather.today.tempMax] = > 90

  • [weather.today.tempMin] = < 30
